Our Beginnings…

Feb. 4 2022

A young Guy Matthews was a familiar face at the docks of Corpus Christi, Texas in the 1940's and 50's where he began working on boats at a very early age. He gained enough experience that by the late 1950's he was hired by Glasscock Drilling, developers of the first drilling rigs to work in water depths over 100ft in the Gulf of Mexico. Guy worked as a dispatcher, later moving to purchasing agent, where he obtained a great deal of knowledge of oilfield equipment. In 1957, Glasscock's offshore drilling unit "MR. GUS I" sank offshore Gulf of Mexico, which may have been what sparked Guy's interest in the marine surveying and adjusting business. He was subsequently hired by Rush Johnson & Associates, where he worked for the next several years, travelling to London and cultivating quite a following in the Lloyd's insurance market.

By 1962, Guy had met another engineer/entrepreneur, Jack Daniel, with expertise in oilfield and drilling equipment, and together they formed the partnership of Matthews-Daniel Company. Jack and Guy stayed active with the company they founded for the next 10 to 20 years before selling the company and moving on to other ventures. Other early employees, Ernest "Ernie" Glover, Eugene "Gene" Kelley, and Jack Davenport, among others, remained with the company during this time and some even longer. Many prominent names in the adjusting and marine survey industry can trace their own "roots" to what is now MatthewsDaniel.

After 60 years, MatthewsDaniel continues to provide the innovation, expertise and solutions that have supported our clients and partners since 1962.  We look forward to continuing that journey with them over the next 60 years.
